Our Process
Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板) Torched Cedar
Shou sugi ban is a Japanese method of treating cedar commonly used for siding. It naturally seals the wood, deters insects and helps prevent moisture from getting in. To achieve this, we thoroughly torch the wood and then scrub it down with water. The process accentuates the grain and gives the wood its dark color.
With this technique we can achieve a variety of finished effects, from a warm brown to black, depending on how long we torch the wood. Oil is optionally applied, which further darkens the color.
Other Finish Options
Raw Cedar
Cedar is popular for garden beds and other outdoor projects partly because of its natural appearance. It starts out a light wood color but as it is exposed to the elements, it acquires a silvery patina.
This is also a great option if you want the flexibility to apply a custom finish to the beds yourself! Stain* it or let your kids paint on the outside- the possibilities are endless!
*Many stains are considered food-safe once 100% cured, we always recommend food-safe/natural finishes. Please use caution and follow manufacturers’ guidance, especially when growing edible crops in your garden bed.
Oiled
We apply a food-safe oil finish to seal the cedar. This will deepen the color, bring out the grain, and add to the longevity of your bed by helping prevent moisture seeping in.
With this finish option, you can choose whether the finish is applied to the both the inside and outside or the bed (which we recommend) or just the outside.
We use a combination of tung oil and raw linseed oil for our oiled finishes, both of which are food safe once cured. You can rest easy knowing your veggies aren’t coming into contact with anything harmful.
